Efficient liquid-solid separation is a cornerstone of success across many industries. At KastRock, we deeply understand the critical nature of this process. Our strategic partnership with Eagle Iron Works enables us to offer Diefenbach thickeners, globally renowned solutions for optimizing process water recovery, minimizing waste volume, and enhancing operational efficiency. Leveraging decades of expertise and an unwavering commitment to innovation, Diefenbach thickeners are the premier choice for applications spanning mining and aggregate processing to CCD washing and beyond.

Understanding Diefenbach Thickeners

Diefenbach thickeners represent a class of industrial equipment meticulously designed to facilitate efficient separation of solids from liquids. These thickeners are adept at densifying products to streamline processing, clarifying wastewater streams, and managing tailings in mining and aggregate applications. Whether the target product is the clarified liquid or the thickened solids, Diefenbach thickeners consistently deliver exceptional outcomes.

Diefenbach Thickener Types

Diefenbach's offerings encompass a diverse range of thickener types, each engineered to address distinct needs and applications. Their Elevated High-Rate Thickeners (HR Series) are optimally suited for immediate recovery of reusable process water or the separation of waste solids from leach liquor. These thickeners boast a fabricated sag steel floor on larger diameter tanks, providing open access under the tank for efficient underflow pumping.

For applications mandating the highest concentration of solids and maximum recovery of process water or leach liquor, Diefenbach's Paste Thickeners (P Series) are the ultimate solution. These thickeners possess the capability to achieve higher underflow densities than conventional thickeners, making them ideal for waste volume minimization and water recovery maximization.

The Science Behind Diefenbach Thickeners

Diefenbach thickeners are the product of meticulous engineering aimed at optimizing the liquid-solid separation process. Each thickener comprises a tank, feed pipe and feedwell, rake (and pickets, depending on the thickener style), a bridge containing the rake drive mechanism, and a chemical dosing system.

The slurry feed enters the thickener from a de-aeration tank and into the feedwell, where chemicals are introduced to facilitate rapid settling of the solid particles. These flocculants or coagulants attract the fine solids in the slurry to form larger, heavier particles that sink to the bottom of the tank.

As the flocculated solids settle, the rotating rake mechanism assists with guiding them toward the discharge cone in the center. The thickened solids are then discharged out the bottom of the tank and sent to waste or further processing. The solids-free liquid (or liquor) overflows the weir surrounding the top of the tank and is sent for further processing or reuse as process liquid.

The Diefenbach Advantage

Diefenbach thickeners are the culmination of decades of knowledge and experience in the realm of liquid-solid separation. These thickeners leverage computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and material testing in Diefenbach's in-house lab to achieve the ideal separation for a vast array of applications.

Diefenbach thickeners benefit from decades of experience and hundreds of installations. With features such as the company's innovative feedwell, which allows for the optimum distribution of flocculated solids throughout the tank, Diefenbach thickeners deliver unparalleled results.

Key Features and Benefits of Diefenbach Thickeners

Diefenbach thickeners offer a range of advanced features and benefits that set them apart from the competition. These include:

Advanced modern feedwell and auto-dilution options: State-of-the-art feedwell designs allow Diefenbach thickeners to achieve maximum density underflow with reduced needs for polymers. Auto-dilution options further increase the rate of settling to reduce the size of equipment required and maximize thickener clarity and underflow density.

• Advanced automation and remote monitoring packages: Diefenbach thickeners are available with advanced automation and remote assistance packages for optimized operation and minimal downtime.

Density monitoring and automated rake lifts: Diefenbach thickeners come with density monitoring systems that allow for optimal control of bed level, underflow density and automation of underflow pumping and rake lift settings.

Liquid recovery rates of 85% or greater: Diefenbach thickeners generate a virtually solids-free liquid overflow, which can then be sent for further processing or reused as process liquid elsewhere in the plant.

Reduce volume of waste material: By separating out the liquid, Diefenbach thickeners can reduce the volume of material reporting to storage or reduce the load on downstream equipment such as a filter press.

Florida’s sunny skies are famous — but so are its sudden downpours. Between June and October, the Sunshine State enters its rainy season, bringing heavy, daily thunderstorms that can wreak havoc on aggregate production. If you’re in the aggregates, mining, or construction industry, you know how critical it is to keep production moving, rain or shine. At KastRock, we’re dedicated to helping operations like yours stay efficient and profitable — even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Here’s what you need to know about the challenges of Florida’s wet season and how you can protect your equipment, your product quality, and your bottom line. Florida’s Rainy Season: A Challenge for Aggregate Producers Rainy season in Florida typically runs from June through October, delivering over half the state’s annual rainfall in just a few months. While this is great for tropical plants, it’s not so great for: • Material Handling and Stockpiles Excess moisture increases stockpile weights, impacts flowability, and can cause materials to bind together. Wet aggregates can bridge in hoppers, cause blockages in chutes, and overload conveyors . • Production Downtime Equipment exposed to constant moisture faces higher risks of corrosion , electrical faults, and mechanical failures. Unplanned downtime costs time, money, and lost production. • Product Quality Concerns Too much moisture in aggregates can affect product specifications, create inconsistencies in gradation, and increase drying costs for asphalt and concrete applications. 4 Ways to Protect Your Aggregate Operation in the Rainy Season Here’s how smart producers can stay ahead of Florida’s rainy season: 1. Upgrade to Moisture-Resistant Equipment Modern crushers, screens, and conveyor systems often feature protective coatings and components designed for wet conditions. Equipment with sealed bearings, corrosion-resistant surfaces, and advanced electrical enclosures can help reduce weather-related failures. 2. Implement Proper Stockpile Management • Maintain high, steep-sided stockpiles to promote water runoff. • Use tarps or covers where feasible to limit water infiltration. • Install drainage systems around storage areas. 3. Schedule Preventive Maintenance Routine inspections and maintenance during rainy months can prevent small issues from escalating. Key tasks include: • Checking belts and pulleys for slippage • Inspecting seals and bearings for water intrusion • Testing electrical connections and control panels for moisture damage 4. At KastRock, based right here in Lakeland, Florida , we know a thing or two about working in the heat. Our subtropical climate means high temperatures and humidity are business as usual, not just a seasonal concern. Prolonged exposure to these conditions can put serious stress on your crushing equipment, especially during peak operating months. Staying proactive with maintenance is the key to maximizing uptime and protecting your investment. Here are twelve expert tips from the KastRock team to keep your machinery running strong, no matter how high the temperature climbs. 1. Prioritize Operator Health and Safety Your equipment is only as reliable as the people running it. In high heat, dehydration and fatigue can set in fast. Encourage your team to take frequent water breaks, rest in shaded areas, and monitor each other for signs of heat stress. A healthy crew is a productive crew. 2. Stick to Preventative Maintenance Schedules Routine maintenance is your first line of defense against unexpected downtime. Schedule regular inspections and services to identify wear and tear before it turns into costly repairs. 3. Test and Monitor Equipment Fluids Coolant, hydraulic oil, and lubricants are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Heat and humidity can degrade fluids, reducing their effectiveness and increasing the risk of component failure. Perform regular fluid sampling and analysis to detect contamination or breakdown early. 4. Maintain Proper Fluid Levels Always ensure fluid reservoirs are filled to the recommended levels. Higher volumes help dissipate heat more efficiently and reduce the risk of overheating. In high humidity, check for moisture contamination, which can affect performance. 5. Replace Air Filters Frequently Dust, pollen, and humidity are constant issues. Clean air filters promote efficient airflow, helping equipment run cooler and preventing unnecessary strain on engines and systems. 6. Inspect for Wildlife Intrusions Birds and small animals often seek shelter in warm machinery. Their nests near hot engine components can create fire hazards. Regular inspections can prevent this risk and protect your equipment. 7. Clean and Inspect Cooling Systems External coolers and radiators are critical in our climate. Remove debris and check for damage or blockages in cooling fins to ensure optimal system performance. 8. Flush Internal Cooling Components Over time, mineral deposits and contaminants build up inside coolers. Schedule periodic flushes to keep coolant flowing freely and maintain effective temperature control. 9. Don’t Neglect Battery Care High temperatures can drain batteries quickly and worsen weak cells. Test batteries often and verify the charging system is working correctly. 10. Monitor Diagnostic Displays Closely Keep a close eye on all gauges and warning indicators. Rapid response to temperature spikes or abnormal readings can prevent small issues from escalating into major equipment failures. 11. Operate Climate Control Systems Wisely Running the cab air conditioning with doors or windows open forces the system to work harder, reducing its effectiveness and lifespan. Make sure cab intake filters are clean to ensure proper airflow and cooling comfort for operators. 12. Allow Equipment to Cool Down Before Shutdown A hot shutdown can cause thermal stress and premature wear on engine components. Idle equipment for several minutes to allow temperatures to drop before powering down. Trust KastRock for Expert Service and Support In high heat and humidity, staying ahead of equipment maintenance is crucial for uninterrupted operation. If you have any questions about best practices or need support, reach out to the professionals at KastRock. We’re committed to helping you achieve your production goals, no matter how hot it gets.
